Hello Oppo! I haven't really posted or commented in a while. Things were not good in my head and I withdrew from everything for a while. Been feeling better and things are looking up, which has been a big boost. Another positive happening has been the big surprise that I will most likely be able to afford a new vehicle sooner than expected.
I'm leaning heavily towards a Subaru Legacy GT wagon or sedan. My only real stipulations are that I fit (I'm 6'4"), get mileage that isn't completely inefficient , and I prefer manual (unless it's a good automatic). Willing to go up to $25k, new or used. I don't fit well in the CTS wagon, Forester, or TSX wagon so those are out already. I like the Crosstour and fit really well in it as well as the Legacy which is top of the list.
Edit: I posted this pretty late last night, I'd like some opinions from the morning/daytime crew. I looked at the Magnum for a long time but it has fallen from consideration even after jgrabowmst gave me a lot of great info regarding them, I could probably be convinced to look at them again. I forgot about the Saab 9-5 wagon/aero existing, does anyone have info on them?
Please make your suggestions! I look forward to them! Will reward with rally cars! Edit: moar rally!

The fourth gen Subaru Legacy is one of the best sedan designs ever made IMO. It looks awesome.

How is the reliability on those? The car I get needs to take a beating and last a while without crapping out on me at inopportune times. As well as be available in the US. I thought the S4 estate was Europe only?

The V8 S4 is one of the most unreliable cars ever made. I would not recommend it to anyone. My dad has one and it is an unreliable PoS.

Available in the US. The new one isn't. The S4 won't be very easy to maintain but the normal A4's should be alright, especially if you get a newer one.

A V60 is something I would also consider.

I've heard similar about the 4th gen and see a Legacy GT as a step towards the current gen WRX in a few years. I really want a big honking wing on my vehicle in the future.

I wish I could consider the V60, too expensive. Capping at $25k since those are the payments I can afford. I'll take a look at the A4, it is gorgeous.

hahaha...24mpg+! Well, maybe. Subaru never seemed to care about that stuff. I'm never getting rid of mine, tho. I have an 08 foz xt sports. It rules.

What do you mean?
I've considered both, they are kinda tough to come by in Ohio last time I checked. Kind of weird I though because there are more than a few around the area I live being driven. What do you think about the A6 estate/avant/wagon?

Haha, I know that's a bit much to ask! I do a fair amount of commuting so I need to care a little about efficiency at least until I finish my bachelors degree.

I mean 25k can get you a car currently in production which helps in resale, the V70/V50 are long gone. The A6 is a great car, not sure it can achieve your requested mpg (that is why I suggested the 2.0T in the A4) but a great car nonetheless.

You could get decent mileage if you were careful, but these cars are thirsty. Once you're a bachelor, you can let loose and start modding and get into the single digits on mpg.

Mpg isn't required honestly, I just wanted to mention it since I do a fair amount of commuting between work and school. Resale isn't a big deal either, I'm gonna drive whatever I end up with for a while. A while as in through my last couple years of school and a bit after.

That's a thought for sure. I don't think I'd do much modding beyond suspension upgrades, airflow in and out, and maybe some other small bits. Have you done anything to your foz?

http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/… I'll throw in this wildcard.
Maintenance on Audis will always be a little bit more complicated but both the A4/A6 are incredible cars.
I'd go either V70 or A6. But then again, Legacys are great cars and my Subaru has never failed me.

Like I said, I'm leaving heavily towards the Legacy. Just using Oppo to make sure I consider all options. You've definitely thrown up a few options I hadn't considered much.
I'm interested heavily in the Audi's but possible maintenance costs are what hold me back. The 9-4x is interesting to consider and I'd definitely fit. I've been looking at the 9-5 wagon/aero the last couple of days. I think they look great and could be good in the long term.

I just bought a third gen Outback XT a couple months ago, which is basically a fourth gen Legacy GT on stilts. I've had to do a couple small repairs, but I love it so far. My overall average economy is currently at 21.7 with about 2/3 of the miles being highway driving.

Current gen WRX might be the way to go. Plenty of space in the front or back for a taller person. I'm 6' and have several inches of headroom. My seat is in the lowest position. With the drivers seat in my position I have a couple inches of rear legroom.
My taller passengers have yet to complain.

I've gotten to sit in a current gen WRX at my local Subaru dealer and was quite comfortable. It does have a lot of room. I don't think I could afford a new one, that would be great though.

Unless you need leather, sat nav or a moon roof they start at $26K. If your budget peaks at 25, it may be tight, financially.

STI performance package (Muffler, Wheels, Short Throw Shifter)
Moon Roof (was a must for me)
Cold weather package (heated seats, weather tech mats, defroster for windshield wipers)
I have the cloth seats and they are comfortable

Seeeeeeeee, the thing is... My best friend has a 2012 Fiesta SE and I've driven it. It is fun to drive, even as a non ST, but not very comfortable for me personally. I was considering the FoST until I was told that it was basically the same as sitting in the Fiesta. I do like both the FiST and FoST quite a bit, but don't think either would be particularly great for me. That Fiesta handles great compared to many cars I have driven, I can only assume the ST improves on that.

I'd consider the STI performance package but the Cold Weather pack would be a must for me. Do either of those include remote start? That is an option I want, the best friend got it on her Fiesta a few weeks ago and it is definitely nice to have.

I'll look for one around to check out. I know just about half of the people of Oppo swear by it. Have you compared it to the Focus?

I actually bought the fiesta without taking it for a spin, although I did sit in one to make sure it would all fit. I did take out a FoST though, and it is basically a bigger, faster, slightly more comfortable version. I didn't feel like those extras warranted the extra 5+ grand over the loaded FiST, and I was definitely swayed by the fact that so many people in the auto journalism industry loved it, and/or bought/leased one. I did find that the pedal box is actually better in the fist (for me), although I want to look into raising the pedals themselves, as my big feet spend a lot of time half on the pedal stalk.

I see, well you're making a good argument that makes me want to check out both. I'd prefer more room and see the extra bit spent as a good choice in the FoST if I were to get one. Honestly I would prefer something newer like a FiST/FoST, GTI, or base WRX. Has a bit more refinement and life in them.

If I ever get the chance down the road (in 5-10 years I'm guessing) I could see myself in a FoRS, the extra room could be useful at that point (assuming I have kids by then) and AWD would be pretty rad.

You can get remote start but only with the CVT. I have not driven the CVT so I cannot comment on how well it drives. I am not sure if what package it is included in, it would make sense if it were paired with the Cold Weather Package on the CVT models.

The CVT isn't supposed to be too bad according to the article on the fp a couple weeks ago but I'd rather have the stick and freeze for 5 minutes. I'm going to check into financing and available incentives on a base WRX once things get ironed out in a week or two. Other than WR blue, what color do you think the new ones look good in? I'm quite partial to dark grey and dark blue.

If you really want to delve into my fuel economy, I've got my car up on Fuelly. I had a couple great tanks (over 25 mpg) driving from Michigan to Massachusetts earlier this week, but that's in part due to low highway speeds thanks to the storm and in part due to drafting the race car tow rig most of the way. I did get 22-23 going out though (the two entries on 1/27), which was all at 70-80 mph, so not bad, especially for winter when economy is usually worse. I'm optimistic for my summer numbers. That said, my current tank, which I'm about 70 miles into, is terrible (about 16) because I've only driven to work and back, about 7 miles each way (almost entirely city), and I let the car idle 3-5 minutes at the start of each journey to warm up. So my average is about to take a nose dive.
Also, a few things I've discovered you need to look out for (and things you need to do with the maintenance). Oil changes have to be every 3000 miles (you can get away with 3500 if you absolutely need to, but that's it) and you need to use full synthetic oil. Most owners recommend Rotella T6 or Castrol Edge. There are a pair of banjo bolts on the turbo oil line, these bolts have little screen filters in them. On some cars they end up getting clogged, which results in bad things happening to the turbo. Some owners have just removed the screens and run without them, which is fine but means you really need to maintain those regular oil changes. If you get an 05-06 it will have a catted turbo up-pipe, which you'll want to replace with a catless variant (fortunately the 07-09 pipes are already catless. Said later models also have the SI Drive, which is pretty awesome).
An extra plus of a Leggy GT/OBXT: Nameless Exhaust

I've been looking at 2009 and 2010 A4 estates. Wow, they are pretty awesome. I plan to test drive one very soon, here's hoping I fit. It is only available with an automatic but that is hardly a detractor compared to everything else.
